Success Stories
Since forming Breathe Free Tibet things have improved at Delek Hospital (the flagship hospital of the Tibetan Government in exile). Here are a few examples of how we helped improve the health of our Tibetan friends:
Imagine what life was like in the hospital when the lights went out. A common problem all over India. Delek Hospital’s back-up electric generator failed years ago. Because of a few generous donors they now have one that is easy to use and reliable. When the power goes off, the lights stay on.
B. The Ambulance:
Until recently, when someone got sick or had an accident necessitating hospital care, they were transported in an old, uncomfortable, poorly equipped, rickety micro-van. Thanks to our efforts Delek now has a brand new ambulance fitted with the latest emergency equipment including, oxygen tank, IV set up and a state of the art defibrillator.
Ultrasound imaging is an invaluable diagnostic tool for detecting gall bladder disease, liver problems such as cirrhosis and cancer. Delek’s old machine, just like an old computer, has been retired and replaced with ultrasound that is technically superior and easier to use. Better technology yielding better results.
D. The X ray Film processor:
Taking a chest X-ray is the first step in TB diagnosis. Developing the film requires an automated processor that Delek lacked. The newly installed machine cuts the developing time by 80% and improves the quality of each film. The result is fewer ‘repeat’ X rays and a more timely diagnosis.
E. The Chemistry Analyzer:
A fully-automatic chemistry analyzer is critical to the practice of modern medicine. Liver function, kidney disease, heart failure, anemia, among other problems are diagnosed with chemistry panels. Every clinic in the US small or large, has access to one, either in their office or by currier. Recent fundraising has now secured a brand new machine for Delek. Good news for patients.
